My connection to the Roberts family is with Elizabeth Jane "Betsy" Roberts, daughter of Noah Roberts and Margaret Jones. Elizabeth married William S. It was first introduced in 1582 in some European countries. Its predecessor, the Julian Calendar, was replaced because it did not properly reflect the actual time it takes the Earth to circle once around the Sun, known as a tropical year.
The reason the Julian Calendar had to be replaced was the formula it used to calculate leap years. The Julian formula produced a leap year every four years, which is too many. The Gregorian Calendar uses a much more accurate rule for calculating leap years.
To get the calendar back in sync with astronomical events like the vernal equinox or the winter solstice, a number of days were dropped.
In North America, the month of September 1752 was exceptionally short, skipping 11 days.
https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/julian-gregorian-switch.htmlAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423622190198093051.post-6306482104320312282018-06-17T22:06:20.699-04:002018-06-17T22:06:20.699-04:00Arthur McGary was my gggrandfather, Isaac Newton M...Arthur McGary was my gggrandfather, Isaac Newton McGary was my ggrandfather, Joseph Russel McGary was my grandfather, and Theodore McGary was my father. The FAG posting can easily be deleted and I would be happy to do that if you would like. I took on the task of listing all WV burials in the Lydick line and simply came across the information that you have entered. Let me know what you would like to do with the FAG posting. We can always make a new cemetery listing if that is needed. I did that in Bedford, PA, for the R.W.
